In July 2023, the Queensland Government unveiled the Draft Queensland Renewable Energy Zone Roadmap, which sets out a plan to deliver 12 Renewable Energy Zones (REZs) across the state’s Far North, Central, and Southern regions.
The development of the REZ Roadmap is an important strategic policy underpinning the State Government's renewable energy targets of 50 per cent by 2030, 70 per cent by 2032 and 80 per cent by 2035. The REZs will support approximately 22 gigawatts of new wind and solar energy into locations where the generated energy can be efficiently stored and transmitted across Queensland. The REZs will be delivered over three phases:
- In-Flight (Now – 2024), In-flight REZs are already underway with key foundation projects in development.
- Phase 2 (2024 – 2028), REZs declared during phase 2 will expand renewable development in regions to better match local demand with projects connecting over time.
- Phase 3 (2028-2035), REZs declared during phase 3 will come online as clean energy demand grows and other large-scale energy infrastructure is developed.
Community consultation for the REZ Roadmap will close in September 2023 with the outcomes of the consultation released in late 2023, and the final Roadmap released in early 2024.
