Ethos Urban was the lead consultant delivering the Planning Approvals Contractor role for the project, which included planning approvals services, stakeholder engagement, visual impact assessment, environmental risk assessment, business and community impact assessment, graphics and production, and management of the specialist consultant team for the State Significant Infrastructure EIS.
Planning approval was provided in January 2014 for the SMTF to be built in stages. The first stage was completed in May 2019 to align with the opening of Sydney Metro Northwest, providing capacity for 22 metro trains.
The second stage of work involved expanding the facility to accommodate additional trains, to meet the operational and maintenance requirements of Sydney Metro City & Southwest. This was completed in October 2022 when the expanded facility was handed over to MTS, the operator and maintainer of the Metro North West Line and the future City & Southwest line.
