Strengthen Newcastle Universities' presence in the CBD

The Honeysuckle City Campus development is a $25m long-term strategic plan that aims to strengthen Newcastle Universities' presence in the CBD and enhance its positive civic, cultural, and social impact in the region.

It involves delivering a new mode of education focused on a compact campus setting within central Newcastle, and the renewal of a former rail corridor to establish a university campus, comprising seven new education and student accommodation buildings.

Ethos Urban secured approval for a State Significant Development (SSD) Concept Plan which establishes the planning framework for the delivery of the university campus. Ethos Urban also prepared a concurrent SSD application for the detailed design and use of the first building of the campus which will house the School of Creative Industries and an Innovation Hub.

Key challenges of the project were overcome by negotiating an approach that incorporated appropriate flexibility for the roll out of the detailed design and use of future buildings. A reduced parking strategy for the campus was also achieved in line with the University’s ambitious sustainability strategy.

The project builds upon the University’s award winning NuSpace building to deliver a world class education facility that will be a catalyst for the revitalisation and activation of the Newcastle CBD.
